What is a Heat Treated Pallet?
May 10, 2025
A Heat Treated pallet (HT pallets) is a wood pallet that has been heated to a minimum core temperature of 56°C (132.8 °F) for at least 30 minutes to kill pests, making it safe for export. The pallet is stamped with an official HT stamp to certify the heating process meets the ISPM 15 protocol.
What is an ISPM 15 pallet?
ISPM 15 is the industry standard for wooden pallets, established by the IPPC. According to these regulations, all wooden pallets must be heat-treated to eliminate insects or fungus. Before being used for shipping, each pallet must display an ISPM15 compliance stamp on the stringer. This mark certifies that the pallet has been properly heat-treated and is safe for use. Approval to use the ISPM 15 mark can only be given by a national plant protection organization or an organization officially audited and mandated by the NPPO.
ISPM 15 Wood Pallets
HT pallets are regulated by the International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPM 15), which requires that the wood utilized for pallets is debarked, heat treated, and stamped with a mark of compliance. The ISPM 15 standards have been adopted by all U.S. trading partners and incorporated into U.S. and Canadian regulations since 2012.

Export pallet requirements
ISPM-15 regulations require all wood packaging materials, including pallets, that are being shipped internationally, meet specific certification requirements. These regulations do not apply to those materials being shipped within the United States or to Canada but do apply when shipping to other countries, including Mexico.
Requirements for exporting pallets internationally that all non-manufactured wood packaging materials designated for shipping, must be either heat-treated or fumigated and have the ISPM 15 stamp.
For safety purposes, your pallets should be no higher than 60 inches and no wider than 96×125 inches.
